Soot, Bird Nests, Creosote — We Sweep it All Away For A Cleaner, Safer Chimney

The busier life gets, the easier it is to forget about things around the house. But one thing that should always be on your annual “to do” list is “schedule a chimney sweeping with a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified sweep.”

As career firefighters, we’ve spent our lives putting out fires and working hard to protect our neighbors in Montgomery County and the surrounding communities. But there’s so much you can do to keep your home and family safe and a chimney sweeping is one of the top things.

By scheduling chimney sweepings annually, you make sure that flammable creosote (a leading cause of chimney fires), soot, and blockages (which could cause smoke to waft back into your home or carbon monoxide to enter your home) are removed before you cuddle up in front of the fireplace or stove. It’s a simple, effective service that can greatly reduce your chance of having a dangerous house fire or being exposed to carbon monoxide, a deadly gas. Why put it off?

With Traditions Chimney Sweeps, having your chimney swept clean is easy, fast, and mess-free. From bird nests and soot to glazed creosote, we have the specialized tools, techniques, and products to get the job done, so you can warm yourself in front of the fireplace or stove this winter without worry.

Chimney Sweeping — The Traditions Chimney Way

Most commonly, we rely on a rotary power chimney sweeping system to clean chimneys. This state-of-the-art system involves a drill and a series of rods, including nest removal rods and creosote removal rods. The appropriate rod is simply attached to the drill and pushed up through the chimney. This removes any blockages and allows us to start the sweeping process.

Once the rod reaches the top of the chimney, the drill activates the rod, and the centrifugal force of the motion keeps the brush head at the end of the rod centered. As the brush head moves through the flue pipe, it knocks loose any buildup and removes soot and blockages.

If there are some tougher deposits that can’t be knocked loose using this method, like glazed creosote, we’ll use PCR (Poultice Creosote Remover).

In situations where rotary power chimney sweeping isn’t the best option, we’ll use traditional brush methods to sweep the chimney. Either way, we’ll get the chimney clean and keep your home clean throughout the process!

Our team uses shoe covers and dust control systems to make sure nothing is tracked into or out of your home. We’ll capture every last bit of soot, dust, and creosote removed from the chimney and attached appliance, and remove it so you can breathe easy and put those cleaning supplies away. Our goal is to always leave behind a cleaner, safer home, and that’s what we do — every single time.
